Beauty Photo Editing Vs Beauty Photo Editing

Updated: Jun 18, 2020

I can lack diplomacy and tact and this topic brings the worst of those two things out in me because this is seriously where I can see the mental health of young women in the beauty community suffering with self esteem and confidence issues

I can also hear myself swearing a lot throughout this post because I’m so passionate about it

For the sake of your eyes and ears lol I’ll use the 🤬 emoji in place of the word f@#k.

Expect to see that heaps

I’m sharing this post to help bring awareness to those people out there who are completely oblivious to the editing and manipulation that’s going on in the beauty community

To create awareness that YOUR makeup is good enough without the excessive editing and to show a before and after photo of extreme editing

I want to make you aware that any picture can look perfect with editing but

IT JUST ISN’T REALITY!!

Even the most perfect skin (no such thing) has texture and pores because it’s skin and not porcelain

It’s no secret that everyone edits their pics now days and we all know it’s been happening for years…….think about professional photography or beauty magazines

I edit mine too but before you go ahead and call me a hypocrite, please continue reading to hear my view. To me, there’s a massive difference between editing a photo enhance the lighting so the colours used are more true to life or lightly smoothing a small wrinkle……not to completely remove it but to reduce it a bit and completely manipulating a photo to the point where its’s too perfect and no longer real

At the end, I’m going to include 2 of the exact same photo. One that’s been edited and the other that’s been completely manipulated. Not only that, I’m also going to tell you exactly what editing I did on each photo so there are no surprises and no secrets

The main difference I see with editing now days is the bs that comes with it because gone are the days when it was in a magazine that needed to be purchased to actually see it. Not only that, the makeup that’s done for these magazines is created by a very professional, highly skilled makeup artist. Now anyone can post a pic online and claim they created the makeup with their tools and products.

I call BS to so many of these accounts 🖕

Some of the crap I see on Instagram and Fb is the biggest load of lying, deceitful shit I have ever seen in my life

I’m part of so many makeup groups here on Fb, I’ve actually lost count

Every day I see at least one post from a person who has edited their makeup photos to the point that they look like they have perfect, porcelain skin with absolutely no lines in sight and even worse than that………no freaking pores and I just see red

Why………

Because I flick through the hundreds of comments on these posts, mostly from young women, might I add, absolutely applauding this photo…….asking the account how they have such perfect skin…..such perfect makeup and the entire time, the account holder is absolutely lapping up the praise and discussing some skincare routine they use…….or the products they use that make their skin look the way it does

All the while, I’m looking at the photo and can visibly see that it’s been edited within an inch of it’s 🤬 life. Including…….the pure white background that’s whiter than a sheet of printing paper and a super strange straight vertical line where the fly away hairs were completely edited out. Or how about the one’s that look like an actual cartoon character……WTAF!!! I’ve seen it. One of them actually reminded me so much of the dad from the American Dad cartoon. It makes me want to scream 🤬

Why don’t I comment on the photos? Because at my age, I refuse to argue with young women about this topic (#sorrynotsorry if that sounds patronising). I am a lot older and have a lot more experience with life to see an over edited photo from a slightly edited photo

This topic upsets me like no other because these young, vulnerable people have absolutely no idea that they’re looking at a picture that’s been so manipulated my graphic design. They honestly believe this person has that much talent. They do have talent, that’s for sure. The problem is, they’re not in the right niche. Many of them are receiving PR from huge beauty brands and are just completely fake

It’s creating the most unrealistic expectations for the younger generation, as well as freelance makeup artists. It sickens me and quite frankly pisses me off like nothing else

The questions I see in the comments of these posts are genuine questions from people who want to learn

The answers on the other hand from these posting accounts……. 🤬 🤬 🤬

“I use a white concealer as my base”

“I really pack the colour on”

“I use such and such base because it’s the absolute best” 🤦 🤦 🤦

Where are the truthful answers like

“I edited my pics using Photoshop or Facetune”

“I enhanced the colours with editing because the camera doesn’t always pick up the vibrance of the eyeshadow shade so it looked brighter in real life than in the photo”

BE 🤬 HONEST. STOP LEADING THESE YOUNG PEOPLE UP THE GARDEN PATH

So many of these accounts are so focussed on receiving their next PR package from the big beauty brand, they don’t care about anything else and are happy for people to believe their lies as long as they get what they want

The amount of crying emojis and sad faces I see from people in the beauty community because they have tried sooooo many times to create a certain look and it never looks like the post they’re currently commenting on……you know……..the one that’s been so manipulated by graphic design……..they actually no longer even look human

I may be the thorn in the side of the beauty community……..but I sleep well at night because I raise these issues and (hopefully) bring awareness to these people who have never known any different

My aim isn’t to cause issues……it’s to do my best to help these people who have no idea what goes on behind the scenes. It’s to make these people aware that so many of these photos are being drastically changed and before they were edited within an inch of their life, these photos probably looked like yours, who’s reading this………..

So ultimately………don’t give up on your makeup dream. Don’t believe every makeup look you see online and definitely don’t allow these makeup looks to make you feel bad about the makeup you’re doing because without editing and straight from a camera or phone, they all look the same

So the pictures below show Editing Vs Editing

Picture 1 shows

Smoothed skin by 20% and

Overall brightening/enhancing of the photo due to the photo I took not capturing all colours accurately

Picture 2 shows

Eyebrow editing (extra filling in) on right side only

Contour enhanced (added in) under cheekbones

Blush enhanced (added in)

Highlighter enhanced (added in)

Line on neck drastically smoothed (edited out)

Pores around nose removed

Skin smoothed by 70%

Overall brightening/enhancing of the photo due to the photo I took not capturing all colours accurately

Now…..not even gonna lie, this editing is so far from perfect because I’m no expert at editing and nor do I want to be

This is purely an example of the BS you see on social media and how much photo manipulation can and is occurring

I hope this brings you some insight

Much love

Corinne 💋
